First-time gardener? It can't be emphasized enough to "start small" when planning the garden. Seasoned gardeners know what we mean. You'll realize success if you do some homework first! Here are some easy tips for first-time vegetable gardeners:

    • Plan your garden first on paper. Measure the amount of space you have to plant your garden.

    • Remember, a vegetable garden needs at least six hours of full sun each day.

    • Locate the garden near a source of water. Carrying buckets of water can be a real turnoff to even      the most passionate gardener.

    • Grow what your family can and will eat. You don't need 40 tomato plants for a family of four! Do grow a little extra for the Interfaith Nutrition Network! Martin Viette Nurseries is a drop-off location for all INN food donations.

Our vegetable, herb and annual seeds, including many that are certified organic, begin to arrive at Martin Viette in mid-January. Buy early to avoid disappointment; popular varieties tend to sell out quickly.
Take time to study the seed packet; it's more than just a pretty picture. There's a wealth of information on it. Save empty seed packets for your journal. Make notations on how well the seed germinated, days to germination, and continue to add comments during the growing season. When the season's over, review those plants that were started from seed. It may help you decide if you will grow them again or give the space to a new plant.

Need some help acquiring a green thumb? At Martin Viette, our goal is to help you become a successful gardener. Ask any of our knowledgeable sales associates for assistance!
